Medical Facilities The plant provides many of the amenities of a fully equipped outpatient medical facility. Hospital-green curtains set off three exam rooms and an audiometric test room. Color-tabbed medical folders complete the picture of a small doctor's office. Here, doctors attend to a variety of medical conditions ranging from sore throats to more serious illnesses. The doctors and nurses are also trained as first-rate first responders who are capable of treating medical emergencies, injuries and trauma anywhere on campus. Once stabilized, the associates are then transported to one of several area hospitals. Doctors and nurses are supported by a full-service pharmacy where associates can find virtually any prescription medications they need.

 To help offset BMW's energy demand, BMW maintains its own power station on site. The station is powered by four turbines fueled by reclaimed methane gas piped in from the nearby Palmetto Landfill. The turbines create enough energy to satisfy about 30% of the plant’s electrical needs and over 50% of the plant’s total energy requirements. Use of methane gas reduces the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 92,000 tons per year. Based on calculations provided by the EPA, the reduction of 92,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year is equivalent to the benefit of planting over 23,000 acres of trees annually or 30 times the size of New York’s Central Park.

 

Police and Fire Departments BMW also maintains its own fire and police departments, which are trained, equipped and certified like municipal services. The fire department is located adjacent to the plant and Sequencing Center. The staff is responsible for conducting plant safety inspections, averaging about 8,400 inspections a month. The department also provides fire and emergency training for associates throughout the plant. BMW provides round-the-clock security and incident investigation. In all, more than 50 trained officers patrol and safeguard the 1,000+ acres and all facilities on the BMW Manufacturing campus.
